What does it really take to make it as a coach and earn a good living from your own business?
My business, in all it’s various forms over the years, has been the territory of my greatest personal transformation.
I call it a spiritual journey because I’ve had to raise the courage to stay in it and ride all the waves. That kind of personal evolution is so rewarding.
To really go for it as a professional coach and create a business that makes your heart sing, the invitation is to …
Stay the course.
Keep the faith.
Believe in yourself.
… even through the down times when you’re not yet meeting your goals.
Examining my journey and those of coaches I mentor, I know that sustainable coaching business success comes down to:
- 4 powerful mindset shifts anyone can make, and
- 3 strategic actions anyone can take
Wherever you are on this journey, you’re in the right place to move forward. It’s about mining your potential.
Mindset #1 – Embrace Being a Beginner
By the way, this episode is derived from my 2nd podcast episode, which aired 7 years ago and has had the most listens of all my episodes and not just because it’s been around.
I’ve updated it quite a bit, because, I’m constantly growing and learning.
Let’s start with the most crucial mindset … embrace being a beginner.
You heard me. Nothing stunts you like rushing to know it all, being impatient about results and thinking something is wrong with you.
Quickly learn to be okay with not knowing everything and with being bad at some things until you get better at them.
Explorers and scientists get the value of this mindset. They know that first you summon the courage and then mistakes made along the way are either lessons to learn or happy accidents.
I’ve never liked the phrase “fake it ‘til you make it”.
YOU CAN be totally authentic while learning.
Be transparent about where you are on the developmental path.
- Tell your clients you’re new at this.
- Flub up and just bounce back.
- Apologize for mistakes and get over it. Leverage every mistake to the fullest.
No one will mind. We’re living in times where vulnerability and the winding road of life experience is appreciated.
Instead of judging yourself, ALLOW yourself to grow.
Mindset #2 – Let Your Coaching Business and Clients Be Your Best Teachers
- Your clients will teach you how to be a better coach, no doubt.
- Your marketing mistakes will teach you how to be a better marketer.
- Your peers will teach you how to be a better leader.
And notice …
What circumstances repeatedly take YOU down a peg?
Those are your CORE LIFE LESSONS.
Make it part of your purpose to master those things. Study what got you here so you can get closer to your goal.
I seem to need to continually learn how to stand in my power and hold healthy boundaries. I’ve come a very long way with this. My business has been my greatest teacher.
And, your client’s Core Lessons may very well be the challenges that also trip you up. Interesting, right? It’s all a big mirror.
Mindset #3 – Become Endlessly Curious and Courageous
My new clients say they don’t feel confident about coaching, marketing, selling, writing — any number of things. That’s totally understandable.
But let’s flip this worry on its head because confidence is a direct result of growing your comfort zone. What that means is that to have confidence you need to first face discomfort until it’s no longer uncomfortable.
Instead of endlessly beating yourself up for a lack of confidence, turn on your curiosity and courage –the precursors to confidence that help you reduce fear and take leaps.
Mindset #4 – Grow Resilience
Resilience is the ability to overcome and bounce back. Make it a game to bring a good-natured attitude to your struggles.
So, if you’re enrolling a potential coaching client and you hear ‘no’, resilience allows you to bat away disappointment and move on, knowing that you can give yourself another chance, always.
It’s that old story about determination when digging for gold. One person quits and walks away dejected. Another person stays to find the goldmine in the very next effort.
Nothing is more freeing than detachment from outcome and knowing that nothing is permanent.
Action #1 Clear Space and Invest in Your Business
Time, money and energy — your fledgling business needs these resources to thrive.
Most independent business owners put $25,000 – 75,000 into their business in the first 5 years just to get it off the ground. You can get away with less if you’re strategic and don’t grab at the bright shiny objects — those scarcity driven online training programs and groups.
So many of my clients say that none of those helped them. They didn’t help me either. And there’s a reason why…
There’s no personalize support or expert review of work product.
Before I share the 2 strategic actions, I’m going to do something I rarely do … be a sponsor for my own podcast.
I have 1 opening starting mid-month for my 5-month VIP Coaching Business Breakthrough program.
You’ve heard me talk about VIP Mentoring. That’s what I’m talking about.
If you’ve been considering this, listen and feel into whether this is right for you …
I only work with 20 coaches each year in this high touch mentoring capacity because you and I will collaborate to create everything for your business. I will work as hard as you do on your behalf.
You have high access to me throughout the 5-months to brainstorm, discuss, prep you for projects and hold your hand through them until they are done to your satisfaction.
- We’ll choose or refine your target audience, if it needs it.
- You’ll conduct market research that’s fun so we know what makes your audience tick.
- We’ll craft your niche, messaging and offers – including a free lead magnet, a high-ticket private Signature Program of your own, plus a single session offer.
- I’ll help you write high response web copy and manage the whole design process.
- We’ll create a visibility strategy, develop content and marketing approaches.
- You’ll learn how to enroll clients into a high-ticket private program.
- We’ll take care of all the little behind the scenes things too like the onboarding process, client management systems, an email campaign, templates to save time.
- Then you can launch or re-launch with more clarity, confidence and ease.
Everything I teach you is what I do for my own business and it works.
This 5-month VIP program is for you if:
- You are either close to finishing your coach training program or finished within the last year or two.
- You’ve been listening to Prosperous Coach Podcast for a while and it resonates.
- You have time to build your business the right way with my support.
- You’re feeling overwhelmed trying to figure everything out on your own and know that your efforts haven’t been strategic enough.
Feel a pull to this? Let’s talk. Fill out the application you’ll find on this page: prosperouscoach.com/VIP. Then I’ll give you access to my calendar for a free Discovery Call where we’ll see if we’re a good fit and I’ll answer your questions.
Check out the What Clients Say page at prosperouscoach.com for testimonials from coaches who launched recently after my VIP program.
Now to the last 2 actions …
Action #2 – Drill Down Your Coaching Niche to Stand Out
I talk about this a lot but it’s surprising how few coaches actually do this successfully
You might think that by choosing a type of coaching, such as life coaching, career coaching, or relationship coaching, that you’ve niched. But what you’ve actually done there is chosen a track – a general direction but not a niche. A track misses the 3 critical parts of a smart coaching niche.
I recently met with a coach wanting to nail her niche. She was lost because she had several different types of training and couldn’t choose what type of coaching she would offer.
I saw the barrier in her mind and we coached to remove it.
Instead of selling a certain type of coaching, such as life coaching, relationship coaching or some other fill-in-the-blank word put before coaching, think of coaching as part of your toolbox to serve clients. Your toolbox might include:
- coach training
- subject matter training or expertise
- specific unique skills or talents
- certifications in assessments
- your unique life story & work experience
All of those can be pulled together to serve your clients.
Then, don’t sell your toolbox. Instead, target one unique audience. Find out what their big problems are on the way to ultimate goals. Then build a high-ticket signature program centered on coaching those topics – a blend of all these things.
This is what I teach coaches to do.
In session with clients, use your intuition to draw from the tools in your toolbox to support your client’s agenda.
This is a better approach than selling a certain type of coaching, which hangs up so many coaches in low-income businesses with not enough clients.
Action #3 – Stay Visible to Your Target Audience
It will not work to throw up a website, put out a weekly social post and wait for something to happen.
For the first few years of your business more time will be spent attracting potential clients in your audience than serving them. That’s not unusual for new businesses.
So strap in, get serious and do what you need to do every day to stay visible to your target audience. Make it fun and connective!
Okay, which mindset or action will you take first?
