Where do you fall in the spectrum of going it alone versus getting valuable support to succeed in your coaching business?
For some people taking no counsel is a matter of pride. Others have the privilege and perspective that anything worth doing is done better with expert support.
I waffled between postponing my success by being a loner and wasting money on tactical group training like how to do email marketing and how to create an online training program.
Coaches spend so much money on these group and online programs without the payoff. It comes down to two things missing — not having enough foundation for these tactics to work and not receiving enough private support.
Is private support to build your coaching business worth it? What are the right reasons to hire a business mentor? Let’s explore this.
6 Top Reasons Coaches Hire a Private Business Mentor
#1 The coach has been holding themselves back because they don’t know where to start.
Please understand there’s no reason you should know where to start as a new coach. The steps aren’t intuitive. In fact, the best order to take the steps are the opposite of what most coaches do, which is to start with a website and social posting without any strategy in place.
#2 The coach feels lost because they don’t have a solid target audience or niche.
If this is you, then anything you’ve already created will need a significant overhaul for it to pay off. It’s all connected. Without a solid audience or niche, the cornerstone of your whole business is missing something and it’s unstable. When you know your true north it guides your success in everything you create.
#3 The coach is only attracting low fee clients and can’t earn enough to stay in business.
This was me … I started a coaching business with impossibly low fees, then had no idea how to raise them while keeping a flow of clients. Know what I mean? It’s a Catch-22!b Pricing that inspires your ideal clients starts with smart mindset shifts before you actually develop your coaching program and price it.
#4 The coach doesn’t know how to articulate what they do in a way that inspires investment.
This is actually a savvy problem to have. It means that you already understand that you need to inspire investment not just a payment for coaching. Stop talking about benefits of coaching and shift to talking about the big problems you solve. It makes all the difference.
#5 The coach feels they are throwing spaghetti at the wall just hoping something will stick.
Marketing is a mystery to most coaches so don’t beat yourself up if you don’t know how to effectively do this. Once you learn how to market authentically for you and your audience it’s a relief and fun. There’s real strategy and confidence behind everything you do to attract ideal clients!
#6 The coach wants to do everything right the first time.
This is my favorite reason of all. If you are thinking this way, you care about your success, which is the most powerful starting point.
If you have time, money and drive to invest in your success, you are a likely candidate for hiring a private coaching business mentor like me.
There are some reasons to hold off on your coaching business completely.
Reasons Not to Hire a Private Mentor Coach
If you are not serious about succeeding in coaching by running your own coaching business, then it won’t help you to work with a coaching business mentor. That is a pre-requisite.
If you are currently overwhelmed in your life, it won’t help you to hire a private mentor or buy any other type of program to build your coaching business.
How do you know if you have enough time and bandwidth? If you have more than 2 of these things going on in your life at the same time you likely won’t have enough time and bandwidth to build your coaching business or handle many clients:
- You are currently in the early months of coach training
- You have a full-time job
- You are taking a full load of classes in higher education
- You are pregnant or have young kids at home
- You have a chronic illness that exhausts you
- You are a full-time care-giver for your parents
Yes, you can definitely build your business if you are currently in coaching training but only if you have time and energy to do the work to build every aspect of your business and later have time to serve clients.
You need a minimum of 15 hours each week on top of whatever else takes time in your life.
About the investment … any private business mentor worth their salt and worth your time will be a significant investment. I researched recently and did not find any reputable private coaching business mentors that will help you build everything for your coaching business for less than $8000 USD.
Keep in mind, your private business mentor will work as hard as you do to help you create everything for your business and they bring expertise, not just a guess about what works and what doesn’t.
I like to collaborate with my VIP clients to help them do everything to launch a sustainable business that’s likely to pay off. It’s all connected so it doesn’t make much sense to piece-meal it with only getting help for certain parts of the business.
I occasionally have someone fill out my application for my 5-month VIP Coaching Business Breakthrough program who says they want help with all of the major milestones and then finishes by saying they don’t have money.
I offer my podcast — all 260+ episodes of free support — for anyone who is not financially able or willing to invest in my VIP program. There’s a ton of value in my podcast for someone who is willing to study the episodes and put it all together themselves.
In fact, I often have coaches say … why do you give away so much, Rhonda? For two reasons:
- I was where you are now and know what you are going through.
- Most people can’t pull it all together by themselves. So much goes into my VIP mentoring. I take the person where they are right now — their skills, zones of genius and holes in their knowledge. A podcast can’t give personalized support.
